Trying to nail down a projector for a photography club and running into the usual headache: everything under $3,000 feels like a compromise. For stills, resolution, color accuracy, and contrast are critical, but most of the affordable models are either decent at one and weak at the others, or they market specs that don't match real-world use.

I've been eyeing the Epson 5050UB, but I'm not convinced it'll really deliver the color accuracy needed for photo work compared to some laser models... and those are way out of budget. Anyone here actually projecting still images with something in this price range? I'd rather hear real experiences than spec sheet hype.

Finding a projector that nails resolution, color, and contrast for photography without blowing the budget is a real pain since most home theater models are tuned for movies, not stills.
The Epson 5050UB is a solid choice.
I think its standout feature for photography is the contrast and the 3LCD tech also means no rainbow effect.
But it's actually a bulb projector, so color and brightness will change over time.
For pure color accuracy, you might want to look into the BenQ HT2060.
It's not 4K, but its color reproduction out of the box is excellent.
Honestly, a quality 1080p image often looks better for static photos than a so-so 4K.
At the end of the day, specs are one thing, but the only way to know for sure is to see your own work projected.

one tip from me is to invest in a projector calibration tool (a colorimeter) along with the projector itself. The Epson 5050UB and BenQ HT2060 are both great choices, but they both need to be properly calibrated to a specific color space, like sRGB or Adobe RGB, to get accurate colors.
Without calibration, even the best projector will give you a disappointing image
