Projector image shifts after auto-adjust

I'm having a frustrating issue with a classroom projector, it does this randomly, when someone connects a laptop, the projector does an auto-adjust, and the image shifts halfway to the right, cutting off part of the screen. Sometimes switching between Extend and Duplicate (Windows + P) fixes it, but not always. Resolution and refresh rate don't seem to affect it, and manually adjusting the horizontal position is the only reliable fix. I can't find a way to disable the auto-adjust feature, any ideas?

is the cable type VGA or HDMI? VGA connections are much more prone to auto adjust issues and signal handshake problems, causing shifts.
have you try a different cable? Even if it looks fine, a faulty or low quality cable can cause these random signal interpretation problems

It's using VGA right now, so that could explain it, I'll try swapping to HDMI or testing with a higher quality VGA cable and see if that helps.
