Do you really need a 4K screen for a 4K projector?

Setting up my new 4K projector and I wanna know, does the screen itself need to be 4K, or will a standard 1080p screen do the job? From what I've gathered and tested a bit myself, a good 1080p screen actually works just fine.
The projector is still outputting all those extra pixels, so you're getting the resolution benefit. The difference a dedicated 4K screen makes seems more noticeable only if the material is ultra high detail or if you're sitting really close. For most setups, especially in a living room or home theater that's not massive, a high quality 1080p screen will still let the 4K projector shine right?

4K projector will definitely give you a good resolution benefit regardless of the screen you're using. The main difference between a standard 1080p screen and a dedicated 4K screen is the texture and smoothness of the surface. 4K screens are designed with a finer texture to avoid any interference with the tiny pixels a 4K projector is outputting. For most home theater setups and normal viewing distances, a good quality 1080p screen will work just fine and you'll still notice a sharper, more detailed image. However, if you want a very large screen size or a truly pristine picture with no visible texture, a 4K-optimized screen could be a worthwhile upgrade.

In my setup, I used a “regular” screen first and later switched to a higher-grade microtexture screen. The difference was subtle unless I sat really close or had ultra sharp content. For a living-room setup, a clean 1080p screen can let your 4K projector shine most of the time.
