Canvas vs Vinyl for DIY screen

I'm putting together a makeshift projector screen for myself in my basement, nothing fancy, just want something better than projecting onto the bare wall. I've been doing research and narrowed it down to two options for material and that's canvas or vinyl but I just dont know which material would actually be better for my setup. My basement is climate controlled but not perfect, there's the occasional humidity spike in summer, and I'm planning to mount this semi permanently on a frame. My budget for this isn't huge but I'm willing to spend a bit more if one option is significantly better. One thing I know is I've heard vinyl can be a nightmare to get perfectly smooth. Would love to rub your minds on this one

I used canvas for mine too. I put it on a wooden frame with a dark cloth behind it. It didn’t cost much, and the picture looks really good. Vinyl is nice if you want something fancy, but for everyday use, canvas is easier to work with and lasts longer.

If you’ve got mild humidity swings, vinyl will stretch and sag over time. Canvas stays tight if you staple it properly. You can also add a thin coat of projector screen paint to boost gain and contrast. Just make sure it’s primed first so the paint doesn’t soak through unevenly.

Canvas works well if you want a quick and clean install. Vinyl can reflect light better but needs perfect tension or it ripples.
