We recently moved into a house with a dedicated media room, complete with a ceiling-mounted projector setup at 16feet from a 120" screen. The previous owners left behind an old projector, but even after replacing the bulb, it only runs for a few minutes before shutting down. That little taste of the big screen experience got us hooked, and now we're on the hunt for a solid replacement. We considered the Epson 5030UBe, which seemed pretty amazing but is a bit too pricey for something we didn't even plan on using a week ago. If anyone has recommendations for a reliable projector that works well at that distance and wont blow the budget, we'd love to hear them!

16 ft to a 120" screen is usually a nice fit for a lot of projectors, the Epson 5030UBe is definitely a solid unit, but yeah, it can be a stretch if you weren't planning for it, 'd reco you check out Epson 3800 or BenQ HT2050A, both are well regarded in the home theater crowd, and they should have enough zoom and throw range to handle your setup

would love to know what you eventually go with

I use the BenQ HT2050A it's really great! or check out the Optoma HD39HDR. Both are solid performers around the $800-$1000 mark, give excellent picture quality for a dedicated dark room, and have good throw ratios for your setup. They're reliable workhorses and won't feel like a compromise coming from that old unit

I second the HD39HDR name-dropped by @BoldCreations, especially if you're planning to use it mostly in a dark room. That brightness plus the throw range hits just right for 120 inches.

If you're looking at a 16-foot throw for a 120-inch screen, the Epson 2150 and BenQ HT2050A are both great 1080p choices that come in under $700. They perform well at that distance, offering impressive brightness and color quality.
